Ghana: A Multidisciplinary Perspective

For the first four weeks of this six-week programs, students will learn about the historical, social, political, economic, and cultural factors that have shaped Ghana's history and development. During the second portion of the program, students will take independent study/special topics and participate in a practicum experience in health care or human ecology. At the conclusion of the program, students will come together as a group to give presentations, share their experiences, and evaluate and debrief.

Students will have a variety of opportunities to gain direct experience in Ghanian culture. The program will include field trips to Elmina Castle in Cape Coast, used for the slave trade; the Kumasi open air market; Bonwire to observe kente cloth weavers; Volta Lake and the Akosombo Dam; nurseries, schools, craft centers, women's cloth markets, museums, and other cultural institutions. Students will also be introduced to local cuisine, art, and music. During their practicum experiences, students may have a village-based living experience.

Course Offerings:
Students will be required to enroll in a minimum of six semester credits from the following courses:

  • Africa: Social Science Perspectives - 4 cr.
  • Area Studies and Multicultural Civilizations: Africa Arts and Humanities of Africa - 4 cr.
  • Health Care in Ghana (open to students from all majors) - 2 cr.
  • Independent Study in Family and Child Ecology (open to students from all majors) - 2 cr.
  • Independent Study - 4 cr.
  • Advanced Independent Study - 4 cr.
