Explore socioeconomic and political issues with a focus on the impact of environmental policies on women and men from varying economic classes and ethnic groups in Mexico and Central America. Examine social change, the ethics of land distribution, eco-feminism, and the complexity of gender, class, and ethnicity in Latin American Society.Course Offerings:
This 16-credit program includes the following:
Program Orientation: A five-day orientation takes place at the US/Mexico border near Tucson, Arizona/Nogales, Sonora.
Housing/Homestay: The Center for Global Education maintains an attractive house in Cuernavaca which will be your home base during the semester. Meals are prepared and served on the premises. You will also spend four weeks living with a local working class family in Cuernavaca.
Travel Experiences: Program includes a two-week educational seminar to Guatemala and El Salvador. In addition, the program offers day trips to Mexico City and to rural villages, as well as opportunities for individual travel on weekends and during breaks.
Community Service and Internships: The program offers the option of community service options, as well as a limited number of service learning internships available for students who meet internship requirements.
Coursework: Program includes: Intensive Spanish; Conversation and Composition; Latin American Literature - 20th Century Voices; Environmental Issues in Latin America (EITHER Environmental Politics OR Environmental Theology and Ethics); Cultural Conflict and Change in Latin America; Internship; and Independent Study.
