Program:
The Antioch Women's Studies in Europe Program is a unique opportunity to examine and compare international feminist issues. The Antioch program enhances academic studies by taking the concepts and theories out of the classroom and putting them into the midst of the feminist movement in Europe; group members become researchers and chroniclers. They meet with women - academics, politicians, organizers, shop-owners, journalists, health care workers - in four European countries. The program is structured to provide students with opportunities to conduct on-site academic research, which gives a sound basis for comparative analysis incorporating the most current social, political, and economic changes. Using readings and field research to record observations and experiences, including critical examination of personal position, students take part in continual discussion and analysis of their observations and experiences.

Program Offerings:
This 16-credit program includes the following:

  • Program Orientation: The program begins with an Orientation in the Netherlands.

  • Summer Preparation: A large part of the reading and some written assignments are completed during the preceding summer. Readings introduce the principle comparative themes of the program and are the basis for preparatory assignments. The readings present a dynamic mix of scholarship, journalism, and partisan opinion, and are assigned for scheduled seminars, site visits, and lectures. Sample of required readings is available on the Web page.

  • Courses Offered: Situated Feminisms: Socio-political Systems and Women's Lives; Issues in Feminist Methodologies; Comparative Feminist Theories; Independent Field Research.
